Second-side apparel artwork

Vero2 2.0.0 can collect separate artwork for both sides of one apparel product, with an optional second-print charge. The first-side selector and color-specific photo controls require an updated October 19, 2026 store build. Second-side artwork and color matching start off.

Follow the shared apparel setup guide for the complete settings and launch checks. This feature is also available in updated Vero 1.8.4 builds.

Enable the second upload

Open Apparel preview under Buy buttons in the intended product template.

  1. Turn on Enable second-side artwork.
  2. Review Checkbox wording. The default is “Add a separate design to the other side.” Custom wording is used as saved; clear it to use the translated default.
  3. Preview the First print side buttons. The customer can put the first upload on Front or Back; Front is the default.
  4. Check the second-side option to reveal an upload for the other side. A back-first order shows Your front artwork for the second file.

A back-only first print does not select an add-on fee. The second upload is required while the checkbox is checked, even when the first upload is optional. Both uploads share PNG/JPEG limits, color mode, and low-resolution warnings.

Unchecking keeps the first file on its chosen side and excludes the second file, preview, metadata, and fee from the order. The second file stays in the current page session if the customer rechecks the option. Uploads are not saved across reloads.

The first-print and lower preview-side buttons use the same variant-button styling and selection animation. The lower buttons switch the physical side being previewed; they do not change which upload is the included first print.

Add a back product photo

Set Back-view image tag to apparel-back and include it in the alt text of suitable product-gallery photos. Keep descriptions and existing variant tags. With color matching off, the first eligible matching photo is used. A blank tag disables back-image matching.

For one photo per custom color, turn on Match back image by color and set Color option name to the product option name, for example Color, Colour, or Garment color. Use tokens such as:

  • navy-apparel-back for Navy.
  • heather-storm-apparel-back for Heather Storm.
  • vintage-black-apparel-back for Vintage Black.

Sizes need no separate tokens or duplicate photos. An eligible plain apparel-back photo remains the fallback. If neither a color match nor a fallback exists, valid uploads still work with the unavailable-preview warning.

When variant-image hiding is enabled, open Product media and match its Apparel back-view image tag and Apparel color option name to Apparel preview. Their defaults are apparel-back and Color. These gallery controls retain the selected color's back photo even in strict mode. A blank gallery back tag disables the exception. See gallery filtering setup.

Changing color updates the matching back photo while keeping the selected preview side. Changing size keeps the same color match. Use photo-match alignment rules and ?preview-align=1 to set each side's placement.

Charge for back artwork if needed

Create a fee product in Shopify Admin, price it, and make it active, published to the storefront, and available to purchase. Enable Enable back-design add-on fee and choose Back-design fee product in Apparel preview. Its selected or first available variant supplies the price.

Choose Per garment to multiply the fee by garment quantity, or One-time per customized cart line to charge once for that configured line. The charge applies only when the second-side checkbox is checked, including when the first print is on the back. Leave the fee disabled to offer the second print without an additional charge.

The page product's required tag controls builder visibility. Selecting a fee product does not change that tag check; the fee product does not need the builder's tag. Per-garment fees update with garment quantity, and the linked charge is removed when its parent item is removed.

Artwork on the order

The first artwork package uses the configured Artwork property name, and the order records First print side. The second package adds Back for a front-first order or Front for a back-first order. With default names, staff receive Artwork and either Artwork Back or Artwork Front. Both preserve the original uploaded file bytes.

With Attach PNG mockup enabled, suitable photos can produce separate mockups labeled for the physical side when the renderer is available. A mockup is a placement preview; use the original artwork package for production.

Test front-only, back-only, and two-sided orders; color and size changes; variant-image hiding; checked and unchecked fees; quantities; and removal of the parent cart item. Confirm original files and expected charges reach the order before publishing.
