01 / The challenge

What needed to work better.

Buckram & Brim offers a diverse range of personalized products, from custom headwear and engraved drinkware to commemorative legacy bricks. However, its original storefront struggled to communicate the craftsmanship, personality, and attention to detail behind the business.

After purchasing 424 Solutions' Vero Shopify theme, Buckram & Brim initially worked with a third-party developer to establish its online presence. Despite having a flexible foundation, the resulting website relied on conventional ecommerce layouts, generic product presentation, and limited brand storytelling. It functioned more like a basic product catalog than an extension of the business itself.

Beyond its appearance, Buckram & Brim faced more complex operational requirements.

Custom hats, personalized drinkware, and engraved bricks each required different configuration options, customer inputs, and production considerations. Traditional product variants and standard personalization fields weren't sufficient to support these workflows effectively.

Certain products also required additional artwork preparation depending on the files customers submitted. Without a way to identify these requirements during customization, the ordering process risked creating confusion around pricing, production expectations, and the finished product.

The challenge was to create a cohesive storefront that could accommodate these different product types while delivering a polished, intuitive shopping experience.

Rather than simply improving the appearance of the existing website, we needed to build an experience around how Buckram & Brim actually operates.

02 / The build

How 424 approached it.

Establishing a Distinctive Brand Identity

We began by completely reimagining the storefront's visual direction and content structure.

Rather than relying on a traditional collection-driven homepage, we created an editorial-style experience centered on the brand's craftsmanship, personal connections, and community involvement.

A refined palette of deep charcoal, warm bronze, and earthy neutrals established a more distinctive visual identity. Expressive serif typography, carefully composed product imagery, and intentional use of whitespace gave the storefront a premium appearance while preserving the brand's approachable personality.

We also restructured the homepage around Buckram & Brim's core offerings, creating clear paths to custom headwear, engraved goods, and legacy bricks.

Brand storytelling became an important part of the experience. Dedicated sections highlight the people behind the business, its hands-on approach to production, and its commitment to supporting the local community.

The result is a storefront that does more than display products. It communicates the meaning, craftsmanship, and personal service that distinguish Buckram & Brim from larger, mass-produced alternatives.

Developing Custom Product Builders

A significant portion of the project involved designing and developing custom product configuration experiences tailored to Buckram & Brim's merchandise.

Rather than relying on third-party product customization applications, we built dedicated configurators to accommodate the business's specific requirements.

These included custom builders for commemorative bricks and personalized drinkware, each designed around the options, limitations, and production considerations of the products themselves.

The commemorative brick builder provides a guided engraving experience with selectable brick sizes, size-specific character limits, and an interactive preview of the customer's personalized message.

Character-by-character input helps customers visualize exactly how their engraving will fit, while automatic character restrictions prevent unsupported text from being submitted.

The builder also accommodates customer-supplied artwork, introducing additional validation and pricing functionality when images require preparation before engraving.

By developing these experiences specifically for Buckram & Brim, we were able to make complex customization workflows more intuitive while maintaining greater control over their functionality and integration with Shopify.

Bringing Custom Headwear to Life With Live Previews

During the project, we also completed and expanded the live product preview capabilities within our Vero Shopify theme.

Buckram & Brim provided an opportunity to integrate these improvements into a storefront where product personalization is central to the shopping experience.

Rather than relying exclusively on static product imagery and option selectors, supported hat configurations can display visual previews as customers make their selections.

This allows shoppers to better understand how their customization choices affect the appearance of a product before placing an order.

For personalized headwear, where visual details and placement can significantly influence purchasing decisions, this creates a more engaging and informative shopping experience.

Integrating these capabilities directly into Vero also helped maintain a consistent interface between standard product pages and more specialized customization workflows.

Connecting Artwork Requirements With Intelligent Pricing

Personalized merchandise frequently involves production requirements that extend beyond conventional Shopify pricing structures.

For Buckram & Brim, we developed conditional artwork handling and pricing functionality to account for the preparation required when customers submit their own designs.

Within the commemorative brick builder, uploaded artwork is evaluated based on its file format.

Production-ready vector formats, including SVG, PDF, EPS, and AI, are distinguished from raster images such as JPG and PNG that may require additional preparation before engraving.

When artwork preparation is necessary, the builder identifies the applicable fee and requires customer acknowledgment.

Additional image-resolution checks help flag potentially low-quality artwork, allowing customers to understand possible production limitations before submitting their orders.

These capabilities connect the storefront's customization process with the realities of production, making additional requirements more transparent while helping the business collect the information needed to fulfill personalized orders.

Instead of treating customization as a simple collection of input fields, we designed the process to account for what happens after the order is placed.

Refining the Customer Journey

With the visual redesign and custom functionality in place, we refined the broader shopping experience to create a consistent journey across the storefront.

Navigation was reorganized to distinguish between ready-made merchandise, customizable products, and the brand's commemorative offerings.

Calls to action were positioned around customer intent, directing shoppers toward the appropriate product collections, builders, or inquiry processes.

We also improved the presentation of the business's production process, helping customers understand how personalized orders move from initial customization through approval and fulfillment.

Throughout the implementation, we extended and customized Vero to support these requirements while maintaining a cohesive design across the storefront.

The finished experience brings together brand storytelling, product discovery, and advanced personalization within a single Shopify website.
